After yet another year of 'ye olde plague' I thought we'd perhaps get back to what we love: crafting, sewing & all things enjoyable! 🌟 I really sat down and mulled over what I wanted to do with my blog, my Etsy shop and my Instagram. I've decided to combine a few things I genuinely enjoy and love into one. So it's going to be fun, magical, a bit seasonal (such as celebrating solstice's) and some fun wizard/witchy themed crafts!</p><p>To celebrate a new look on what I want to offer here, I have designed a new logo and banner. These are my own photos as I do have a photography page in Instagram as well (see my side bar for link). I share all things pets, love of nature and dressing up. I think we deserve to make each day a little magical in whatever way we can. So stay tuned for not only crafting DIY but so much more (including collabs) 🔮</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhXZkaBTwPi2xH33rTmKRemU4IYeUZufWBslauuHd6qzh8FXOTATUWxe05GCU3LmoGJeypJdocDjbWC2imIEzneSMIJIMmsi_JnG6VdbS4bh9axhjMkmQg0_t68rLMy3kXeELricFcIQ7xqv6qKjYzVdrD4wv2o-LMz8z5JjE0ld9ecVeJXV0dkwXCow/s900/June%202022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhXZkaBTwPi2xH33rTmKRemU4IYeUZufWBslauuHd6qzh8FXOTATUWxe05GCU3LmoGJeypJdocDjbWC2imIEzneSMIJIMmsi_JnG6VdbS4bh9axhjMkmQg0_t68rLMy3kXeELricFcIQ7xqv6qKjYzVdrD4wv2o-LMz8z5JjE0ld9ecVeJXV0dkwXCow/w400-h400/June%202022.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>My old images and my new images (2022)</i></div><br /><p><br /></p>CraftinessbyBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08896574816708193469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1425346453258667969.post-5349079416066219132021-03-21T15:52:00.001-07:002021-03-21T15:52:34.494-07:00Goodbye dumpster fire, hello 2021!<p> Let us forge ahead into this new year! I am finishing a handmade kimono coat for my spouse. It was meant to be a gift but it's taken sometime to complete. I have made a lining and the outer coat along with a separate collar. It's been a little tricky as I used cotton for the outer coat and a jersey knit for the lining. I have been in the mood to sew some items I've just never made before. From aprons to new dresses, I have patterns galore to pick from! If you visit my<b> Instagram</b> (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/craftinessbyb_etsyshop/"><i><span style="color: #ff00fe;">follow me <b>HERE</b></span></i></a>) you can see videos and updates on crafty projects. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">All in all 2021 is certainly feeling more leveled and less stressful. I hope everyone has been taking care of themselves, their health and reducing stress. Go for walks, enjoy quiet time reading, put on a funny show ~ do whatever helps you feel happy! Be sure to pop on over to my Etsy shop to make purchases or request custom orders. And if you want to interact try my Instagram page where I am on every few days each week. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div>CraftinessbyBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08896574816708193469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1425346453258667969.post-56490628982727346162020-04-26T11:02:00.000-07:002020-04-26T11:02:14.677-07:00A FREE face mask pattern, Vintage, Ramadan greetingsSpring has arrived... sort of. The weather going from winter to spring was a real roller coaster this year. We had days of very warm weather and then it would snow over night! Flowers often felt so much stress fro this they didn't do so well. Some trees (like my weeping cherry blossom) bloomed very early. I still will decorate my tree for May Day coming up in the next week, even if the blossoms have already fallen off.<br />

As we all have found, this year did not start smoothly. The global pandemic that is COVID-19 has taken hold of the entire nation. Places have had to close their doors for service temporarily to keep with state laws being enacted. I closed my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CraftinessbyB" target="_blank"><i><b>online Etsy shop</b></i></a> before Ostara (Easter) because our state began a stay-at-home order. I wasn't entirely sure if I'd be able to sell items during this time but it seems we can safely do so. I think in May I will re-open my shop because I have new items to offer. But for now to pass the time and help communities ~ I have a FREE face mask pattern for you!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been sewing 2 styles of face masks: the above curved shape face mask and the folded (I call it accordion) face mask. The above pattern is fairly easy to copy by hand and cut out. The angled middle of the mask covers your nose. You can use just 2 cut pieces of fabric for it and I showed how to add the ear loops. If you can not fold under the edges to sew, you can use what is called bias tape. It is fabric and is pre-folded to cover raw edges and is very simple to work with and sew on. I did not feel it was right to sew and sell masks during such a health crisis. And many people can not spare the extra money to buy a mask, pay for shipping and wait for it's arrival. That's why I offer the above pattern, which - you can easily find similar and more variety of free patterns online too!</div>

I know, they have come and passed already. But I am here to re-cap, update and share photos with you!<br />
<br />
I again decorated my weeping cherry blossom tree with ribbons like a May pole! My tree has easily grown by 2"s already this year. I ended up with ribbon a tad too short then usual. But that's okay, I wrap and braid it around and tie it with a big bow.<br />

I enjoyed my spring floral crown of faux pink roses and ribbons. I actually intend to make a (yet another) floral crown with some faux butterflies this year. I have some parts of it sitting in my craft room but I may need to match some new ribbon.</div>

I have also become busy with my resident seamstress work! About every 4 weeks or so I bring my sewing machine to my martial arts school. I sew what students bring for a good 2 1/2 hours but I also happily take home anything they drop off. I currently sew on patches, hemming and repairs. I enjoy helping them get their uniforms in tip top condition and personalized.</div>

Some I want to share and make are eco-friendly in nature. I want to have less wasteful items that I use daily in the home and even my beauty routine. Enter: re-useable toner pads.<br />
<br />
What I used for these are flannel pieces, three layers total. This gives some thickness and any toner absorbed won't simply drip out of the fabric. You could also add a layer of another fabric if you want this to be thick and absorbent.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-doYJUgYd20s/XGyoAF2cj9I/AAAAAAAAeJs/omzOQuqUiOAY3wG78xUOF2hH7in66OK1ACLcBGAs/s1600/20190201_103753.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-doYJUgYd20s/XGyoAF2cj9I/AAAAAAAAeJs/omzOQuqUiOAY3wG78xUOF2hH7in66OK1ACLcBGAs/s400/20190201_103753.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to make my toner pads round, so I found a suitable circle shaped object and simply traced it. You can pin your layers together, with a traced shape, then cut! This will save you time and makes sure the shapes are all matching.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FRpFHlt15jU/XGyod5Zr3mI/AAAAAAAAeJ4/arq0DzoEnP8R-7f0lSYsA2xdF53l6RMqQCLcBGAs/s1600/20190201_144635.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FRpFHlt15jU/XGyod5Zr3mI/AAAAAAAAeJ4/arq0DzoEnP8R-7f0lSYsA2xdF53l6RMqQCLcBGAs/s400/20190201_144635.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made three rounds total, so see how I liked the size. You can make as many as you please or simply start with one and decide from there. Once you have the pieces cut, you should pin them together. You want any printed side facing IN, as after sewing, you TURN your shape inside out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KQFU8AKJnJo/XGyo3I9eSoI/AAAAAAAAeKA/HL8oUkMH2HY0rQkZOhJ4i90vNjCQcEtGQCLcBGAs/s1600/20190201_145215.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KQFU8AKJnJo/XGyo3I9eSoI/AAAAAAAAeKA/HL8oUkMH2HY0rQkZOhJ4i90vNjCQcEtGQCLcBGAs/s400/20190201_145215.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As an added pretty detail I put a small ribbon loop. If you decide on something similar, be sure the loop end is facing inside, as shown above. This loop is also handy for later on: you can easily hang the toner pad up to dry! When you sew your toner pad be sure to leave about 1 inch that you do not sew, you need an area to turn this inside out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once you turn the toner pad inside out, you can hand sew that small opening. I decided to add some decorative stitching on the edges of mine. If you machine has this feature be sure to test it on a scrap piece of fabric beforehand. That way you can decide how close to the edge a design will stitch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is a nice DIY project for those wanting to try the fancy stitching on your machine. It's also a nice project if you want to introduce more washable, less wasteful, home and beauty items. Cotton pads and makeup wipes end up in landfills. If you want to aim to reduce waste you can easily introduce these into your home and routine. They offer a nice product that is less wasteful, washable, lasts years and you can customize them how you please. Handmade means sweatshop-free. Made by hand, often by only one artist or seamstress. Which means what you buy has been in the hands of one talented person! In my case I've been the sole artisan and seamstress of <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/craftinessbyb" target="_blank"><b>my Etsy shop</b></a>. I have learned my skills from 3 generations of family since I was about 6 years of age. It's my passion and joy to make and create gifts for people who value handmade.</div>

In the coming year of 2019 I hope to start up my YouTube channel once again. I've had a lot of requests for beginner sewing videos and tutorials. I'd love to share the basics of setting up a sewing machine. As well as simple, beginner projects that won't break the piggy bank. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also hope to share my many (many) pattern and sewing books! I have used ones, vintage ones, special ones from other countries ~ so many things to make, only so much in my craft budget.</div>

The air is crisp, the weather has cooled and foliage is ready to begin! If you've been following me on Instagram you will see I've been quite busy. So I will share a few more things in this post that I had shared briefly in IG.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GAM26GOOGg0/W6pMjFWWZuI/AAAAAAAAZLM/Sg4mt5UlSHc9yUT8C01HXiccRspX_mJ9gCLcBGAs/s1600/18-09-17-11-39-59-096_deco.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GAM26GOOGg0/W6pMjFWWZuI/AAAAAAAAZLM/Sg4mt5UlSHc9yUT8C01HXiccRspX_mJ9gCLcBGAs/s400/18-09-17-11-39-59-096_deco.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love thrift store finds and this sweater was one of them. But it had a hole at the sleeve near a seam. So how do you go about fixing this up? I decided to crochet the hole to repair it. I used embroidery floss that matched the peachy color. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HPK5IQ_ExIg/W6pMjDYvriI/AAAAAAAAZLQ/-z-H96KKHzcuhFD-a42bR-VVfz2js5nkwCLcBGAs/s1600/20180917_112005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HPK5IQ_ExIg/W6pMjDYvriI/AAAAAAAAZLQ/-z-H96KKHzcuhFD-a42bR-VVfz2js5nkwCLcBGAs/s400/20180917_112005.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>A very small crochet hook and peachy floss</i></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EKIOBwoJIkk/W6pMjT3ryII/AAAAAAAAZLU/OcoF9QCC_FkdRX1ljXzswzyRIiX6AE88gCLcBGAs/s1600/20180917_113001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EKIOBwoJIkk/W6pMjT3ryII/AAAAAAAAZLU/OcoF9QCC_FkdRX1ljXzswzyRIiX6AE88gCLcBGAs/s400/20180917_113001.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I turned the sleeve<i> inside out</i>, so I worked in the <i>back</i> section. This better allowed me to crochet into some of the loose yarn on the sweater. The goal was to close the hole and not leave any of those loops of yarn un-crocheted. This closed the hole while having some matching floss and since it was no bigger then a quarter in size, it's not that noticeable. You could use this method on most sweaters and you don't need to be fancy in the repairs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've begun some Halloween projects I want to list on my Etsy shop! I decided on some drawstring bags with themes on them. So far I have two in the works, as seen below. I hand stitched the jack-o-lantern and black cat. I then stitched them to my chosen fabric. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The black cat has such fine details to the fur! I gave it texture and whiskers along with a little nose and bright eyes. The drawstring bags I have made from scratch! No pre-purchased, pre-made bags here! I really value making and offering quality, handmade items for sale. </div>

I use faux flowers so you can keep the crowns and wear them for years to come. But in the past I've also made some from natural resources and they lasted about a week or less. They are a real passion for me and I want to share them with others. Be it for dress up, a special occasion or festivals, they have many uses. I plan them out from the faux flowers and foliage I pick. They often have a color scheme and I just work on them organically, letting the vision of what I'd like it to be flow. </div>

I swear, this month gets warmer each and every year now. But soon, those autumn temperatures will be joining us shortly. The trees foliage has not started yet but the leaves are beginning to fall.<br />
I had some short staying visitors ~ foster kittens! They arrived at my home as orphans and just 5 weeks old. They were sisters and it was unknown what happened to their mother (or any other litter mates). The runt of the two had some special needs that I was informed of. She seemingly was much smaller then her sister and had a underdeveloped jaw. She may have other issues yet unknown, since she was quite small.<br />

Needless to say some fosters have more challenges then others. These two were not litter trained at all. Despite my best efforts they returned back to the shelter about 9 days earlier then expected. I tried my best, had two littler boxes, they had their own room - but as a volunteer I could only do so much. Also a concern about Felicia not growing as fast as her sibling was something the shelter wants to address. I volunteer for a no-kill shelter which never turns away special needs or special medical care pets. I can pop in whenever I want to check on their progress!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the meanwhile, I had been doing small home repairs and redecorating! If you ever have a house you will know how daunting even the smallest of tasks can be. I wanted to re-paint the closet shelving along with re-paint the closet door in our bathroom. My husband kindly stripped the old paint off the door - turns out, it was solid wood. I picked a pale blue shade since the walls are a pale grey colour. I've been posting with updates of my project on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/craftinessbyb_on_etsy/" target="_blank"><b>my Instagram page</b></a> for my crafting. It did come out nicely and I'm happy we did this ourselves!</div>

I decided to add something to hang my many hair decorations up on. I decided on cork board and floral pins! It was very affordable and an easy project for any novice to try. This way my barrettes, clips and other hair decorations are easily visible. And the floral pins have a pearl faux end to them, so you can hang elastics easily. It made for a simple way to display things without needing any nails or tape to keep the cork board in place.</div>

It's hot, it's humid and you want to stay indoors and in the cool breeze of a fan. So what have I been working on? Plenty of things, that's for sure! Of course stop by my Instagram to view weekly things I do or share about.<br />
<br />
Each season I enjoy decorating and celebrating the season. On June 21st we had Summer Solstice, which did these photos for and a staff.<br />

I've been sewing, crafting and doing repairs to thrifted clothing I already own. The vest above needed some TLC recently. The piping on this (the edging) was frayed and just falling apart with time. So how do you repair that? Well I wasn't going to tear apart the piping edge on this! Instead, I find a simple (beginner. easy) solution that can be done in an afternoon. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I purchased puff paint to make repairs with. I used a dark brown shade which matched perfectly! With the use of a paint brush, I could simply dip it in puff paint, then paint the piping. This left a nice smooth coverage and no more frays or cracks! Just put down a little paper and use a wide brush, easy as that.</div>

I am also working on a toy plush for a friends soon-to-be baby boy (due in autumn). I based this off Nightwing from the Teen Titans series. Since it's for an infant I kept a simple round pillow shape to it. I am going to use flannel fabric, felt and sew it mostly by machine. I try to never put any pieces that an infant can tear off - safety first! So no buttons, ribbons or the like. I only recently cut the pattern pieces out and traced them onto fabric.</div>

Spring has arrived and summer is on it's heels. I broke out the floral crown for spring equinox ~ I even had something special in store for my weeping cherry blossom tree.<br />

I celebrated the new season by dressing in pastels and turning my tree into a Maypole! I broke out the ribbon and went about braiding it around the trunk. It came out really lovely and I kept it up for a few days in the nice spring weather. </div>

Fun was had, the weather was wonderful and I enjoyed myself. If you like daily or weekly photos, videos and DIY's please stop by my Instagram! I have one devoted to crafting, which is the Craftiness by B one (see my links in the side bar). For non-crafty things I have an Instagram for that as well, which is my BerthaBee Photography. I share natural beauty, health, animals & pets, vintage and other styles I'm enjoying. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now for more projects I've been up to! A top project I had was to paint and hang up my bee house. I bought one from a local hardware store this spring. It's made with bamboo wood and is meant to encourage wild bees to turn it into their hive. I painted the roof red because... I needed a way to find it in my wooded backyard. But also to encourage bees to investigate it (red is bright like flowers). I hung it up and am awaiting the new bee house guests. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>bamboo bee house</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used acrylic paints with a water based sealant. This way it can hold up well over the months in various weather. Due to it being made with bamboo, it's unlikely to rot any. And the round bamboo pieces inside are there to encourage a hive to take up. Now that all the flowers are blooming I do hope to see some bees move in soon enough!</div>

<b>Hello, and since it's today ~ <i><span style="color: #e06666;">Happy Spring Equinox! </span></i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ie6JWSTpR9I/WrFmrl9MJoI/AAAAAAAASfE/pSVkvOcAH8IGfUjXMafRSqtBuabX3Co5gCLcBGAs/s1600/20180224_153928.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ie6JWSTpR9I/WrFmrl9MJoI/AAAAAAAASfE/pSVkvOcAH8IGfUjXMafRSqtBuabX3Co5gCLcBGAs/s400/20180224_153928.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been going through my wardrobe the past several weeks. Weeding out clothing I no longer wore, had out grown style-wise or just found to be too worn out. I always donate my gently worn clothes to several local places. And of course, I end up at the thrift store seeking new clothes! It's my number one place for gently worn, pre-shrunk clothing finds. </div>

In doing that I often find pieces I love but want to improve upon. It could be a simple change in buttons or altering it to fit my figure better. If something is too small you can add width in several places. The first can be at the zippers, which I will touch upon next month (currently doing just this to a skirt!). The second is to add width under too-tight arms. Some are very easy alterations for any beginner while others can be more involved.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a pretty blouse I picked from the thrift store recently. It's vintage, I suspect from the 60's and the white buttons it came with just had to go.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I took the original white buttons with me shopping at a craft store. I picked the same size to fit the current button holes. I simply cut the old ones off and added the new black buttons. It's all done by hand and is an easy change for any beginner seamstress.</div>

My other fun project was new kitty wings for my fluffy cat who wears a harness (because he is a puppy cat!). In the past I have made him fairy wings, which I have shared in a post with adorable photos. But since I made the dog a dragon wing cape last year, my cat needed some too. </div>

I know, several weeks late and almost a month so (ha haha!). Winter has been a mixture of storms, warm spells and my pets having little colds. I know, the poor fur babies!<br />
<br />
So if you have not paid my etsy shop or Instagram a visit ~ you should! I update with photos, new listings and projects I am working on. I also enjoy posting short videos of projects, techniques or things I have found in craft stores. You can also keep up with me on those places since I enjoy posting often.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>my DIY fawn sleep mask</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
An ongoing project is my Fawn sleep mask. This is a project I've had going since last month. I used a homemade pattern based off a current sleep mask I have. From there I sketched ideas of what I wanted to make, coming to the idea of a fawn or deer. I used cotton printed fabric, flannel for the back (against your eyes) and felt for the ears and antlers. You can use any elastic for the piece that goes around your head, I used soft elastic used for clothing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also made a new front door decoration for the coming of spring. I based it on <a href="https://www.blarney.com/st-brigid_s-cross/" target="_blank">Saint Brigid's </a>cross. She is often associated with Ireland and Gaelic stories and lore. Her cross is unique in it's shape and is weaved from many types of materials. I used faux grass reed, flower and ribbon for my decor. And on the back I did add some glued spots to keep it together in the outside weather. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So far no birds have decided to use my decor for their nests. It was an afternoon project that I greatly enjoyed making. You can also find many tutorials online about how to weave the middle cross part. Once you get the hang of it it's not too difficult for children to learn as well. Mine is hung on my front door but can also be made smaller and hung on the hearth of ones home.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And now for my pets - goodness me! Our calico got sick and needed medicine. And if you have a large cat (she is 13 pounds) you know what a challenge it is to trick them into taking it. The dog got quite sick after a vet visit, we think he caught something while there. The poor boy, you could tell how uncomfortable he was. Off to the vet (again) to give him medication and a shot, he has since recovered. And the boy cat, my fluffy mutt. He surprised us all! He is newly diagnosed as diabetic. The veterinary first suggested we try a special RX food for him. We return for a follow up next month to see if insulin daily will be the next step.</div>

<i>metal rustic star, front door</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My front door has a big red rustic star! I bought it plain (already painted) and surprisingly on discount for early December. I used wide ribbon and green bells to add a festive look. During other holidays I can switch the ribbons or put faux flowers on this. You can find most seasonal decorations at craft supply stores or even large shopping stores.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought some lovely wooden banner pieces last year. They came plain and I glued scrap paper on the front, then cut around them. They come in many shapes to pick from too, so you can make some for other occasions or holidays. </div>

The branch tree also came plain. I made garland from fabric scraps and added some ribbon. The berries are faux and on little wires, so you can place them anywhere. These come in other shapes, sizes and are very affordable. Round of globe shaped ones could be hung from a ceiling and could even contain lights.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year I made some new ornaments for my Etsy shop. The first three are gnome ornaments! Each is different and has delicate hand stitched faces. They have a small bell at the top and are about 4.5" in length. The felt mistletoe is available in two shades: dark sage and light sage. They have beautiful matte beads for berries. Each is topped by a glitter red ribbon and are about 5" in length. If you want to view more photos or make a purchase please visit my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/craftinessbyb" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a>. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Coming soon I will be sharing a DIY for beginners: sleep mask! If you follow me <a href="https://www.instagram.com/craftinessbyb_on_etsy/" target="_blank">on Instagram</a> you may have seen some photos up about it. I will be making a post devoted to the making of it, along with directions and photos. You can trace your current sleep mask for a pattern or sketch your own (I promise it's not difficult!). And you will be able to use scrap fabric or just fat quarters. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that should catch you up for this month of crafting! I hope you are having a festive season with sweet treats and much crafting.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's that time of year ~ time to break out some seasonal decorations! Each year I do enjoy making something new. But to start, I am putting up a faux berry & fruit garland I made. This is a very easy do it yourself project for the beginner! Almost every craft store will start to bring out the holiday decorations and supplies. They might have leaves, fruits, berries, flowers and pine (all faux) in bags or sold as a pack. It's easy enough as picking out what you like and stringing them together. Many are made with foam as the main body, such as the ones in my photo. So it's easy to use a large needle and thread to make the garland. As an added decoration to the garland, I used cut pieces of ribbon tied on every few inches.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As winter approaches I will begin to put more up and will share them! Including my new front door decoration this year: a rustic metal star. But now for a bit of 'shop local' this year!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Every year I encourage shoppers to consider buying from small local businesses. This year is no different with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Business_Saturday" target="_blank">small business Saturday </a>coming up. This is held each year to encourage people to go out to their own small shops within their town or city. By shopping small you help support local business & local artisans. You can also do this through websites such as Etsy, Artfire and more. When you buy from an Etsy seller<span style="color: blue;"><u style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"> <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/craftinessbyb" target="_blank">such as myself</a> </u> </span>help skilled artisans, seamstresses and crafters. I use my skilled trade to create products that are high quality and learnt from three generations of family. You also help by reducing how far a product must travel to reach you <i>PLUS </i>you get sweat-shop free goods!</div>

<i>fair trade small business locally</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went out earlier this week to avoid the chaos of shoppers. I was happily surprised to find a small shop devoted local artists & fair trade goods for sale. They had local artists and crafters goods for sale with the promise of everything being sweat-shop free. You might be surprised to learn how many <a href="http://www.gurl.com/2016/05/01/clothing-stores-and-brands-that-use-sweatshop-labor/" target="_blank">brands today</a> are made in sweatshops. But don't fret, many high quality brands are made without the use of dangerous sweat shops (and sadly, child labor) such as <a href="http://www.gurl.com/2016/02/28/ethical-and-sweatshop-free-clothing-brands/" target="_blank">these brands</a>. Be sure to do some research if you want to try and support well made, ethical brands this holiday shopping season.</div>

I hope you are in the holiday spirit and ready for a evening of trick-or-treating, maybe you prefer a scary movie marathon or going to parties. This year I wanted to show some of the Halloween decoration I have made in the past. And a glimpse at the Halloween costumes my spouse and I are wearing this year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bg38wYVNnHM/WfeIyKrSBsI/AAAAAAAAMyA/u16umPLX7VAfG9NOD-gG3H1d7WPpaBXjQCLcBGAs/s1600/Handmade%2Bhalloween.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="777" data-original-width="629" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bg38wYVNnHM/WfeIyKrSBsI/AAAAAAAAMyA/u16umPLX7VAfG9NOD-gG3H1d7WPpaBXjQCLcBGAs/s400/Handmade%2Bhalloween.jpg" width="323" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love lanterns and used paper bags for jack-o-lanterns. You simply cut the face or design onto one side, then spray the bag with glitter. I use battery powered candles inside, so no fire risk here! The cute skeleton was a bought plain wooden decoration. I painted it with acrylic paint and used a all-weather purpose sealant. I then added a bow and some tulle to it. But my large hanging ghost is made from scrap fabric I had. You make it like a pillow case, I used felt for the eyes and mouth - and just poke a hole at the top. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MU3UPfJXdow/WfeJdNZBJmI/AAAAAAAAMyI/R1yUOsksiZQxbi1yA5tjkijTdyCVsesxQCLcBGAs/s1600/Halloween%2Bghost.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="677" data-original-width="627" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MU3UPfJXdow/WfeJdNZBJmI/AAAAAAAAMyI/R1yUOsksiZQxbi1yA5tjkijTdyCVsesxQCLcBGAs/s400/Halloween%2Bghost.jpg" width="370" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To fill the ghost body, I take a old plastic bag and stuff it with whatever I have: other plastic bags, some stuffing or even crinkled up paper. I use a stick to make the 'arms' stay out. If you want to view a video of it, please visit my <a href="http://www.thepictaram.club/instagram/craftinessbyb_on_etsy" target="_blank">Instagram</a> page. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And now to marvel at this years Halloween costumes! Our costumes are part thrift store part handmade. The capes are handmade and I'm very proud of them. This year our design was<i> Sith Lord and Apprentice</i> from <i>Star Wars</i>. It was so much fun dressing up and I took our photos. I also did our makeup for them as well. </div>

The sage green full length dress is finished! It had been put on hold several times due to fostering adorable kittens (see previous posts) and just needing the space in my craft room to lay out such <i>loooong </i>pattern and fabric pieces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nFw9X3mwkYY/WcqqdMbyE8I/AAAAAAAAKrc/Zi55nSNH-HAq92bXnuwPVOHm0rdvYAynACLcBGAs/s1600/20907278_10213704189624463_1943022916_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="973" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nFw9X3mwkYY/WcqqdMbyE8I/AAAAAAAAKrc/Zi55nSNH-HAq92bXnuwPVOHm0rdvYAynACLcBGAs/s400/20907278_10213704189624463_1943022916_o.jpg" width="242" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was the first sewing on my dress. I had done the back zipper and was trying it on for fit. To anyone who sews, you may already know that pattern sizes aren't 100% accurate. I used Simplicity pattern 1137, misses & women's sizes. But even with my measurements the fabric had more stretch to it then I anticipated. I had to bring in the bust and torso and bring the hem up by at least 3"s. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S8mheYrV6yU/WcqqZ00oySI/AAAAAAAAKrY/z6Dr79kaeuEbzdybNBWL2xzqn8LM207XgCLcBGAs/s1600/20170918_190407.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="936" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S8mheYrV6yU/WcqqZ00oySI/AAAAAAAAKrY/z6Dr79kaeuEbzdybNBWL2xzqn8LM207XgCLcBGAs/s400/20170918_190407.jpg" width="233" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also decided to give this dress a square neck. I wanted something delicate but with ribbon. I found a beautiful ribbon with gold thread and sewed this on completely by hand. Don't be afraid to add embellishments and decorations that suit your taste. The actual pattern suggests flowers (the pattern includes directions) at the neckline. But you could add lace, embroidery or even jewels. This pattern can be a challenge if you are unfamiliar with sewing clothing. I'd suggest it for intermediate or those comfortable with sewing & altering their own clothes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />CraftinessbyBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08896574816708193469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1425346453258667969.post-11312066803398903292017-08-02T12:41:00.001-07:002017-08-02T12:41:42.100-07:00DIY from scrap to hair clip!Hello, how have you been? It's the dog days of summer and it's just winding down now. Hot, humid and cooler in the evenings. The pets want to nap all day and I don't blame them!<br />
<br />
What I have today is a DIY project from scraps you might have in your craft supplies. Every now and then we buy something that had a big flower, button or decoration on it. So I remove these and set them aside for some later use. I had a thrifted top that had some large decoration in fabric, I took one off. I decided it would make a great hair clip and almost resemble a fascinator.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sbGClvnvsPQ/WYIlzNxqG4I/AAAAAAAAIxI/WhIXVjWL1HA8E30Oi_lSCFGLOgT8LexjQCLcBGAs/s1600/20464729_10213519374844209_779054756_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sbGClvnvsPQ/WYIlzNxqG4I/AAAAAAAAIxI/WhIXVjWL1HA8E30Oi_lSCFGLOgT8LexjQCLcBGAs/s400/20464729_10213519374844209_779054756_o.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i>scrap fabric and old earring</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So above is the scrap piece from the thrifted top. It's almost like a deconstructed flower with pretty lace, raw edges and quite large. I wanted to add to this and again picked through some of my craft supplies. I found an old clip-on earring with no mate. I used some pliers to remove the earring from it's backing and laid them out. I also had an old mis-match barrette and that is what we will be using for this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R4GKbIrguYk/WYImgNrEeYI/AAAAAAAAIxQ/Zp6MOo614M8lEaMm-11vSrmZgqkNHncKwCLcBGAs/s1600/20472696_10213519386564502_1982775682_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R4GKbIrguYk/WYImgNrEeYI/AAAAAAAAIxQ/Zp6MOo614M8lEaMm-11vSrmZgqkNHncKwCLcBGAs/s400/20472696_10213519386564502_1982775682_o.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i>the back of the scrap piece we will turn into a hair clip</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, before we decorate our scrap piece we need to make a back for it and attach the barrette. Turn your scrap piece upside down, so the back is facing up. Trace around the shape roughly and cut it out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<b><i>this part will clip to your hair</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut a small slit in the felt to allow part of the hair barrette to slip in (see above). This just helps hide it from view and lets you stitch it to the felt piece. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bPnP_Qh17HQ/WYInO7EWc6I/AAAAAAAAIxY/6P1V6xXTRpUJagBxJo0b6i6bfoNdyN_nwCEwYBhgL/s1600/20464731_10213519390524601_343525046_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bPnP_Qh17HQ/WYInO7EWc6I/AAAAAAAAIxY/6P1V6xXTRpUJagBxJo0b6i6bfoNdyN_nwCEwYBhgL/s400/20464731_10213519390524601_343525046_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Turn your felt piece over and stitch the barrette to the felt. I simply stitched around the metal to make sure it's secure. If you can not stitch your barrette to your felt, you can use glue. I would suggest a glue for metal or plastic and lets you attach it to felt. A very good crafting glue for many types or material is E6000. It can be used on metal, jewelry, fabric and plastics. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_sbyvpZSelU/WYIol5h6NgI/AAAAAAAAIxg/qlGqcqbhGf8IgKqP0n1eFdbpqy_FHbLUQCLcBGAs/s1600/20502599_10213519386084490_771747158_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_sbyvpZSelU/WYIol5h6NgI/AAAAAAAAIxg/qlGqcqbhGf8IgKqP0n1eFdbpqy_FHbLUQCLcBGAs/s400/20502599_10213519386084490_771747158_o.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><b>now for the added decoration!</b></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once you have the felt attached (stitched or glued on) it's onto the next fun part! Take your decorative piece that you are going to be using. Remember I had that old earring I took apart? I took the beads and laid them out until I liked how they looked. I decided to stitch the beads to my fabric piece. If you are unable to attach decorations with thread you can always use that same glue I mentioned above (the E6000 or other fabric glue). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You take your decorated piece, as mine is seen above (in the photo) and you will attach that felt backing to it. Now you can easily glue the felt backing (with the sewn/glued barrette) to your decorative piece. Be sure to let it dry well, often left to dry over night. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can repeat this for almost any number of materials! You can use tulle, netting, ole scraps of fabric and more. Play around, lay them out, glue or stitch and create something new!</div>

The heat is on, the evenings are longer and the days are relaxing. I decided to give something a try which I have never done before, natural fabric dye. The idea behind this is to try alternatives to traditional chemical dyes. You can find many posts online dedicated to this practice with many ways to do it. I tried a method of soaking the fabric in white vinegar for a few hours, rinse, then try to dye it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HzxTwcvDzAM/WUWC74ORZKI/AAAAAAAAHTY/6S0OvlWbGCwWKZTUt8b9qavfT4tHL5aKQCLcBGAs/s1600/18789503_10212844579214740_385039299_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HzxTwcvDzAM/WUWC74ORZKI/AAAAAAAAHTY/6S0OvlWbGCwWKZTUt8b9qavfT4tHL5aKQCLcBGAs/s400/18789503_10212844579214740_385039299_o.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i>boiling blueberries</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I would boil some fruit such as blueberries (I also tried spinach for green and turmeric for yellow) and place the cotton whit fabric in the boiling pot for about an hour. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O9T9py3QNp8/WUWDSCXxvyI/AAAAAAAAHTc/vWry0pjKpvsagelQt7Cnt6SrRMx9QsNzACLcBGAs/s1600/18745309_10212844579094737_308758119_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1063" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O9T9py3QNp8/WUWDSCXxvyI/AAAAAAAAHTc/vWry0pjKpvsagelQt7Cnt6SrRMx9QsNzACLcBGAs/s400/18745309_10212844579094737_308758119_o.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i>straining turmeric</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then let the fabric soak in the colored dye water for a few hours, rinse in water and line dry. But how did it go? Well after I gave them a second rinse the color hadn't taken very well. I think in the future I will have to try a different method for this. Because as you can see, after the first rinse and line drying, they color was quite bright.</div>

<b><i>foster kitten Watson</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Meet my foster kittens! About 7 weeks of age about now and starting to explore my home. I named them, if only for a way to address them beyond "kitten 1 & 2" since most shelters tend to re-name kittens when they are ready for adoption. So please meet grey & white Watson and all grey Sherlock. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I've been doing this for over six years now. Shelters of all types often need volunteers with the space and time to open their home to homeless pets. They are not always young, some can be several years old. They could have been feral, from a family that could not care for a litter or a surrender-by-owner situation. And it's not just cats but dogs, rabbits and other animals that need foster care with shelters nationwide. I specialize in socializing cats, correcting behavior (with positive reinforcement, such as take them directly to a scratching post to learn it) and how to live in a household that can be busy, noisy and have other pets. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lmqX7VPh4ao/WUWGHNjQxYI/AAAAAAAAHT0/ixDjDfUU0Zci_lz7RKGJE0K7t1Kafl7rgCLcBGAs/s1600/20170615_201959.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lmqX7VPh4ao/WUWGHNjQxYI/AAAAAAAAHT0/ixDjDfUU0Zci_lz7RKGJE0K7t1Kafl7rgCLcBGAs/s400/20170615_201959.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i>our dog Choji relaxing with Watson</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So if you ever want to help locally I'd suggest finding a shelter and stopping in. You may be required to take a course (often for free or a small fee), some shelters ask you to supply litter and cat food (others supply it for you) and they may have their own guidelines to follow. I can share pictures but I can not reveal the shelter name or when these two are available as per their guidelines. But if you have the time and space to spare, do consider giving back to your community and volunteering with a shelter!</div>

Spring has arrived and the birds sing, the trees are in bloom and the flowers are beautiful.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-efWApz-hf14/WQiYS705pKI/AAAAAAAAF4g/HTAQpC8g8FQ-8dJlmj5R4GPwI9KzPQ31wCLcB/s1600/17757426_10212321574419947_6609240381586601133_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-efWApz-hf14/WQiYS705pKI/AAAAAAAAF4g/HTAQpC8g8FQ-8dJlmj5R4GPwI9KzPQ31wCLcB/s400/17757426_10212321574419947_6609240381586601133_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So this DIY I'm sharing is something I tried and it worked. I simply had a big, bulky barrette with crystals on it and wanted a headband instead! You will need a piece of hair decoration that you want to transform into something else. I had the barrette and I also had a spare plain headband. You will need pliers and some jewelry wire for this as well. I used some ribbon at the end but that's optional. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First step is to remove the crystals (or maybe you found one with beads) using the pliers. Place the removed paces aside - be careful to not poke yourself with exposed wire!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4xhUrmILayw/WQiZZ72khAI/AAAAAAAAF4o/d_rs6W1TF1sozGuodRVs09AZdQyTTrgrQCLcB/s1600/18195871_10212588696977844_749503857_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4xhUrmILayw/WQiZZ72khAI/AAAAAAAAF4o/d_rs6W1TF1sozGuodRVs09AZdQyTTrgrQCLcB/s400/18195871_10212588696977844_749503857_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>supplies all ready</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SL4-B5o_3iM/WQiZgoYa18I/AAAAAAAAF4s/AlkSyMykp80Ipur8SGhkdghHkuHlSs_4QCLcB/s1600/18209715_10212588699297902_213268370_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SL4-B5o_3iM/WQiZgoYa18I/AAAAAAAAF4s/AlkSyMykp80Ipur8SGhkdghHkuHlSs_4QCLcB/s400/18209715_10212588699297902_213268370_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>remove pieces and set aside</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now with your crystals all removed, you can decide how you want them arranged on your headband. I simply laid my headband on the table and started to place the crystals how I liked them. They could be in order of size or shape, whatever you prefer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--q7EPcU0RSE/WQiaCwyczjI/AAAAAAAAF4w/UabSHI1vWwAxvBXCn-RQNObNlQhw-EVBACLcB/s1600/18217094_10212588699657911_2068421090_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--q7EPcU0RSE/WQiaCwyczjI/AAAAAAAAF4w/UabSHI1vWwAxvBXCn-RQNObNlQhw-EVBACLcB/s400/18217094_10212588699657911_2068421090_n.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>place your pieces how you like</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now the jewelry wire comes into play. You will need to twist a end of the wire around the headband, then proceed to add a crystal. You add a crystal, twist wire around headband once, then add a crystal. You do this until all the pieces are attached to the headband.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5m1h3CYGTEs/WQiadxFB5oI/AAAAAAAAF44/DdLLO17-Bqwn7oDrmbKObQDB8zxm92DGQCLcB/s1600/18191236_10212588700337928_2111971349_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5m1h3CYGTEs/WQiadxFB5oI/AAAAAAAAF44/DdLLO17-Bqwn7oDrmbKObQDB8zxm92DGQCLcB/s400/18191236_10212588700337928_2111971349_n.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>crystals wired onto headband</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The optional part is you can leave this with the wire exposed or you can cover it. I covered my wire with some ribbon that matched the headband (in this case, brown). I started at one end and I decided to glue the ribbon on with a dot of glue. I let it dry, then wrapped the ribbon over the exposed wire - all the way across the headband. I simply glued it again at the other end. An alternate is to stitch the ribbon on, wrap, then stitch again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The weather is warming, birds are out daily and flowers are sprouting up everywhere. After a long harsh winter I think we could all use some sunshine. Thinking of sunny days ahead, I am going to share how I've been altering a bought dress.<br />
<br />
I think like many women, you sometimes find a beautiful dress but it just doesn't fit <i>quite</i> right. It could be too big in one area but too tight in others. The straps could be too long or short. Maybe the hem line isn't what you hoped for but the rest is a perfect fit! So what do you do when this happens? You go about learning how to alter the dress.<br />
<br />
I bought this lovely dress from a store and it had everything I wanted: a navy blue color, soft embossed print, cinch at the waist <i>but</i>... it was too large in the bust and the straps are far too long for me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yfPZDsOhcHE/WNa_XZ2vl-I/AAAAAAAAEts/SrB1Np9rB94yjhoVdkfNNEgirALW0pdxQCLcB/s1600/17264780_10212200670997437_7891761514836991859_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yfPZDsOhcHE/WNa_XZ2vl-I/AAAAAAAAEts/SrB1Np9rB94yjhoVdkfNNEgirALW0pdxQCLcB/s400/17264780_10212200670997437_7891761514836991859_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Yes, that says 'police box' on the waist band!</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you didn't know before you sure know now - I'm a nerdy kind of girl. I love Doctor Who and was beside myself upon finding this dress! It resembles the TARDIS and has this lovely tulle at the hem line. As you will see in my photos it has black piping on the bust and that is where I decided to pin the bust in some. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ewqzmsInkpM/WNbAuZPblEI/AAAAAAAAEt4/_wshVO42lhsvoQ6yhUYFWF77aW5SvRYnACLcB/s1600/17353507_10212200671037438_2464119318525960004_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ewqzmsInkpM/WNbAuZPblEI/AAAAAAAAEt4/_wshVO42lhsvoQ6yhUYFWF77aW5SvRYnACLcB/s400/17353507_10212200671037438_2464119318525960004_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a dress form, it's a way to size clothing to your exact measurements. It's very handy and they frequently go on sale at many craft supply stores. I placed my dress on the form and pinned it in areas that were too large or baggy. I then tried it on to make doubly sure it was just right. I am stitching this by hand with a curved needle, sometimes sold as an upholstery needle. But they do make small ones for working on clothing and they are about 1 1/2"s in length or more. Using a curved needle while your dress is on the dress form makes this project very easy. I am sewing it at the black piping and the new stitches are not visible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can apply this method for most any bought clothing that you need to fit your measurements correctly. If you do not have a dress form you can carefully pin the article of clothing while you wear it. And this can be easier if you have a helper to pin areas for you, so you can stand up straight while wearing it. To add width is a different post I'm afraid and I do plan to share how to someday. It's often not as difficult as it sounds. But to take in clothing, this can be done by a novice with just a bit of guidance and practice!</div>

We certainly are not under a three foot pile of snow right now, and it's nearing the end of February! It is warmer this year at this very time then last year. Last year we had an ice storm and temperatures so cold it was below freezing wind chills. This year we have had.... several 55<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif;">°</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">F (12</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">°C) days a week now. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">So this post I am sharing spring as it is showing up in my back yard. I have many wildflowers showing up and some I'm not certain about. </span></span><br />

I hope it finds you well and enjoying the winter days. A project I have done is great for beginners and a DIY. You don't need a sewing machine for this one, it is hand stitched. If you can not sew, you can use fabric glue (but buttons are best sewn on). My local library has a wonderful selection of crafting books. I found one all about vintage inspired alterations!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The cute book is called 'Chic on a shoestring' and has an array of DIY simple projects. Many can be done in a few hours or an afternoon, depending how quick a study you are. Now what I worked on was how to add to a shirt you already own. I decided on a plain stripe boat neck top that I love.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XPq1h9dHwjo/WH5Y-gqxxQI/AAAAAAAAEm0/W5FRXEkV6SMD3z1OlmlueaPzojj6PVuDACLcB/s1600/16122067_10211632092303325_841920377_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XPq1h9dHwjo/WH5Y-gqxxQI/AAAAAAAAEm0/W5FRXEkV6SMD3z1OlmlueaPzojj6PVuDACLcB/s400/16122067_10211632092303325_841920377_o.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wanted to add some embellishment for this simple top. I started by playing with some dark navy ribbon and adding buttons. I suggest hand stitching but you can try glue if you prefer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-boLTaGQyPeE/WH5YoaKt32I/AAAAAAAAEmw/mywZRBTKLlQm3PX5ZTUBuOLl2nNzE3YfwCLcB/s1600/16121653_10211632106503680_572454713_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-boLTaGQyPeE/WH5YoaKt32I/AAAAAAAAEmw/mywZRBTKLlQm3PX5ZTUBuOLl2nNzE3YfwCLcB/s400/16121653_10211632106503680_572454713_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have these big octopus steampunk buttons and random vintage buttons. So I just stitched the ribbon and played with it some. I added the buttons last then stitched them in place. If it helps your embellishment to stay in place better, try adding a piece of felt behind it, so the whole thing is attached to something. </div>

Now my top had buttons already by the wrist of the sleeve. I removed the buttons and added navy ribbon. And if you wanted to add buttons here (as I did) you can after the ribbon is on. I wanted my top to have a whole new personality to it and played around some.</div>

After my sleeve ribbon and buttons where in place, I had to decide on the embellishment (with the octopus button). I did pin this in various places to see what I liked best. I ended up with it on one side, almost as if it were a brooch. Once you pick the placement pin in place and hand stitch to your shirt. It's really that easy! Other alternative ideas is ribbon down the center of a top and buttons by the neck line. You honestly can not go wrong when adding to a top!</div>

If you've admired my photos over the past year, it's due to my growing interest in photography. I have always taken my own photos for all my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/CraftinessbyB?ref=hdr_shop_menu" target="_blank"><b>Etsy</b></a> items for sale. And I've greatly enjoyed capturing photos to share with family & friends who live far away. But now my new veture is in selling my works. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the past I have offered my skills to animal shelters for their homeless pets. As I have learned, a well done photo (or five) of a homeless pet up's their chances of adoption. I would try to capture them in their most organic forms. Be it playing, sleeping, a funny quirk they have or how affectionate their were. I will continue to offer my photography for shelters at no cost, since it's a passion of mine.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had the pleasure of photographing my niece's first homecoming this year. And I knew I wanted a nicer camera for the future. So after that I went hunting and picked my first 'nice' one in some years, a Nikon Coolpix. It is considered a 'point and shoot' with 40x zoom and a great first timer camera to work with. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will now have a button on my navigation here to go directly to <b><a href="https://berthabeephotography.smugmug.com/" target="_blank">my website</a> </b>just for purchasing my photography. I plan to offer more galleries soon, with animals and nature themes. I hope you go browse what I have up already and help support me, an independent photographer, on my new venture into 2017. </div>
